About Us - Philosophy

Our Philosophy

We noticed that there is a lack of art based activities where you can come to learn new skills and meet new friends involving the whole community.

I, like many young girls went to ballet classes and music lessons but what about the art clubs? There seem to be many drama and singing groups but a distinctive lack of art focused groups for young people. Art can be a very therapeutic and soothing activity that builds confidence and resourcefulness in your child.

Children's parties - With musical chairs and clowns becoming a bit last century children are looking for alternatives. Our themed parties involving active art in the form of magical hunts around your garden, parkgrounds or home really get the creative imagination working. We also offer kaleidoscope making, clay work, T-shirt prints, sewing, weaving and more for an older age group.

We want to show you how to save yourself money and hopefully encourage alternatives to big corporations. Bring along your old, torn but loved clothes to transform in to a new bag or purse. Old china into a mosaic mirror, vegetable or flowers planted in old or grown out of wellies - you get the idea! We use materials in some workshops that would otherwise go to landfill utilising our local Scrapstore for recourses.

Communal crafting is on the rise - spending time with the family and interacting with your community. For example calling all Dads! - Why not make a mother's day card and present with your child. Why buy something when you can make a personal gift, spend time together with your child and learn skills you can use again and again.

There is a rebirth of the arts and crafts movement as part of the search for quality of life in a post-consumerist, recession-hit society. Recession means we have reached tipping point. We've realised over consumption and waste is to be avoided for economic reasons as well as environmental ones.

The reasons for this resurgence are not hard to see. Fed up with being pressured by advertising into buying stuff we don't need, which is badly made or doesn't fit. In the fast passed, immediacy of the technological age craft is a slow pursuit. You're proud of the end result having created something yourself seeing it through from start to finish.

Lots of people are now investing time in traditional crafts- ceramics, textiles and weaving which help put their own special touches into their homes. Their children are beginning to learn these crafts as well. It is a really positive development for the future as if we left it another generation we would have been in danger of losing some of these skills for good. With courses in ceramics, metalwork and glass closing down, this country faces a skills crisis.

You may have felt at school like you were no good at art; however everyone shares the capacity to develop a skill, based on good teaching, enthusiasm and time.

Funky art house believes art should be fun- without pressure and accessible to everyone whatever your ability.
