Spring Term – Sunday Mindfulness and Art Club- 2022
When: The term dates for the Spring term are:- Sunday 16th Jan , 30th Jan, 13th Feb (Feb Half Term) Sunday 6th March, 20th March, 3rd April

Description: Spend a relaxing Sunday morning learning mindfulness and taking your relaxed mind into mindful art activities. Often we will be exploring process art covering a wide variety of materials including drawing, pattern, painting, print, paper crafts, clay and more.

Have you ever been so involved in art making (or other creative activities) that you have lost track of time? This happens because creative activities ease us into a process of concentration, focus, flow and absorption which is the same process we experience when we’re meditating. This is why drawing, painting, colouring and crafting are naturally mindful. Adding mindfulness to our creativity helps us to just enjoy the process rather than focusing on end results, which means we draw, colour or paint more freely and more joyfully.

The course which runs for a year introduces mindfulness in a way that that is engaging, relevant, and enjoyable, making use of music, games, activities, experiments, videos and group discussion to convey key concepts as well as teaching mindfulness practices such as mindfulness of breathing and the cultivation of kind awareness. This will run alongside mindful art activities, we will be following the Youth Mindfulness programme. The core objectives of the course are to enhance the general mental, emotional and social wellbeing of children by improving:

· attention
· self-control
· self-awareness
· emotional regulation
· gratitude
· self-kindness
· kindness to others

What is Mindulness?

Mindfulness is the “awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”
Although mindfulness is a natural human capacity it is not our normal orientation to experience. We are often lost in ruminative thinking about the past or the future – not truly present with what is happening in the here and now. By training our attention to dwell in the present moment we can gradually cultivate this capacity. With time, we are able to develop greater awareness of our thoughts, emotions and actions. This awareness enables us to: understand and regulate our emotions; reduce ruminative and self-critical thinking; exercise greater control over our impulses; act with more will or purpose; and develop a heart-felt kindness to ourselves and others.

Mindfulness and Wellbeing Experiences and Outcomes

The mental, emotional and social wellbeing experiences and outcomes in the youth mindfulness programme emphasises the importance of self-awareness and the ability to recognize, understand and manage emotions. As such, teaching young people how to be mindful directly contributes to their general wellbeing. Mental, emotional and social wellbeing experiences and outcomes are directly impacted by the Youth Mindfulness Kids Programme.
